Good

The New York Times promised in its edition of February 2, 18883, that "The theatrical performance to be given tomorrow evening at the Academy of Music in aid of the Bartholdi pedestal fund will undoubtedly be a brilliant social event. All of the boxes except one or two have been sold, and the seats in the parquet and balcony are selling rapidly." And so it must have been.  Viewers of the TV series The Gilded Age may note that this event took place at the Academy of Music, whose social dominance was shortly to be challenged by the upstart industrialist caste's preference for the new Metropolitan Opera.  This extremely rare program is yet another in a series of such events that united the "four hundred" - but who was counting - behind the worthy cause of erecting a pedestal for Bartholdi's tribute to American freedom.  This particular event received a rave review in the Time of May 9, 1885.  It featued a minstrel show, a tongue-in-cheek lecture on astronomy, and a play of sorts. Such events united theater professionals and amateur performers.
