Publisher's cloth. Large 4to. Color frontispiece "Mother and Child" by Sargent Johnson. Contemporary ownership inscription on front free endpaper, dated June, 1941, of Helen High. Helen High (later Helen High Burdick) grduated from Mount Holyoke College in that year. Irreplaceable reference work. Very good condition, frontispiece creased, spine lettering somewhat dull, pastedown gutters stained. With the important Amistad foldout inserted after p. 124. Valuable register of then working Black artists, including Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence. Separate critical index of other artists whoe worked on the "Negro theme," such as Diego Rivera, Miguel Covarrubias, Malvina Hofmann, Reginald Marsh, John Steuart Curry, as well as Vaelazquez, Rubens, Joshua Reynolds, and so on.
