Immigrating from Amsterdam to New York City in 1979 when he was in his early twenties, Ari Marcopoulos quickly became one of the key documentarians of the downtown art scene that included fellow artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring,Robert Mapplethorpe and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
