A graphic portrayal of the First Italian War of Independence and the defense of the Roman Republic. Fifty line engravings, "by the most eminent artists at Rome in 1849; Secreted from the Papal police after the ‘Restoration of Order’ and just imported into America.” With a preface, index, and annotations in English, Italian and French.
An unusual work with depicting many of the events and people involved in the Italian Revolution of 1849. Substantial use of caricature and iconography, including anthropomorphic characters.
Frans Masereel bookplate on front pastedown.
CONDITION: Fair; most of the plates are clean and bright; several of the first have light damp stain at lower gutter; some have light foxing at edges not affecting the images. The text at front has damp stain at the lower gutter. Covers are soiled, corners bumped and most of the binding has chipped off of the spine. See the photos.
NOTE: Plate 49 is mislabeled as a duplicate plate 48.
