About Bill Mauldin

Just prior to the U.S. entry into the second world war, Mauldin joined the Arizona National Guard. Once mobilized, he immediately began contributing cartoons to the division newspaper that featured the enlisted man’s perspective on army service, and later the war. , cartooning was his full-time Army job. In 1943, joined the staff of the Armed Forces flagship publication, Stars and Stripes; a year later, his cartoons were syndicated to newspapers throughout the U.S.

Mauldin’s depiction of the war as a muddy slog for enlisted troops ran afoul of Army brass, including General George Patton, who wanted to toss “the little son of a bitch” in jail. But in 1945 a Mauldin cartoon that showed “victorious” American troops every bit as downtrodden and war-weary as their enemy prisoners won the Pulitzer Prize – making Mauldin the youngest winner of the award. That same year, Up Front, his book about the war, became an immediate best seller. He came home a hero.

Post-war, Maulding contributed editorial cartoons for a variety of newspapers and syndicates, joining the Sun-Times in 1962.
