1920s-30s Shanghai Advertising Posters are a distinct genre of graphics-- once considered sloppy and unconventional by Western standards, these advertising posters are now a cultural treasure. Originally created as ephemeral promos for the vast array of products which flooded China’s newly opened economy, Chinese advertising posters have had a lasting design influence on the region. Vintage Chinese advertising posters combine Oriental and Occidental design styles, influenced by Chinese art of the late 1880s and Art Nouveau & Art Deco design of the 1880s-1920s.

Shanghai was ground zero for the varied (and often risqué) advertisement posters of the 1920s.
