This postcard is stamped at the back with text that is cut off “H. Matamoros, Mex.”., printed on the front with “Prisioneros federales hechos en C. Victoria, por los Constitucionalistas” and Runyon’s name. This translates to “Federal prisoners taken in Victoria, by the Constitutionalists.” Handwritten on the front is, “Just before these men were stood up and shot”. Depicted are dozens of Mexican men standing and on horses, apparently in the last moments of their lives. 

Robert Runyon (1881-1968) was a photographer in the Rio Grande Valley. In 1913, Runyon began recording the events of the Mexican Revolution, traveling with General Lucio Blanco’s revolutionary forces allied with the United States. In Gen. Blanco’s first victory against Gen. Huerta’s forces they took the city of Matamoros in 1913, the aftermath of which is depicted in this rare postcard.
