Item Details

Richmond, VA, Multiple, 19th-century

Good/Very good

This lot of 19 early portrait photography originates from 11 photography studios around Richmond, Virginia. The subjects represented range in age from infant to elderly and are mostly unnamed. One portrait says, “For Sammie”, other named subjects are Mr. Warren Nunnamaker, Marie Halzgrefe, and Josephine Fillhaus. The portraits are largely 6 ½” x 4” with the print pasted onto stiff board decorated with the studio name. The largest are two in portfolios measuring 14” x 10”. Studios represented include Thalhimer Bros, Homeier-Clark Studio, Colonial Studios, Old Dominion Gallery, The Carbon Studio, Vernon Gallery, W.W. Foster, Campbell & Co., Foster, Campbell & Co, New York Art Gallery, The Jefferson, & Anderson Gallery. The condition is generally good or very good. Damage includes minor spotting or tearing to edges.

One of the most interesting portraits depicts an anonymous seated young woman in an elaborate black dress with crutches and holding a posy. Her expression appears hopeful despite the photograph suggesting circumstances of injury and grief.
