INSCRIBED by Ansel Adams to Thomas Catron. Small 4to. 60 pp text; 32 black & white photographic plates by Ansel Adams. Foreword by Lawrence Clark Powell. Blue cloth in photo-illustrated dustjacket. Near fine in very good, uncommon dustjacket (wear to extremities, more so to spine ends; light rubbing on rear cover).
This book reprints the Death Valley portion of Corle's earlier Desert Country (1941) and is enhanced with Ansel Adams photographs. The author has gathered together some of the legends and possibly true tales of Death Valley. Among them are stories of William L. Manly and the Bennett-Arcane Party, the Lee Brothers, Old Harmony and the Twenty-Mule Team, Who Built the Furnace at Furnace Creek, Death Valley Scotty, and more. "Corle's prose and Adam's photography are combined to create a book of great beauty, preserving the spirit and face of the barren wilderness." - dustjacket flap. (Enduring Desert pg. 56)
The inscribee, Thomas B. Catron III, came from an illustrious Santa Fe family; his grandfather was a United States Senator and his father a Brigadier General. Growing up in Santa Fe, Catron went to Stanford, fought in the Second World War, and as a lawyer, spearheaded and was a Founder of the Santa Fe Opera, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and the Spanish Colonial Arts Association, among other Santa Fe cultural institutions.
