Ludlow's autobiographical work chronicling his personal experiences with hashish—a concentrated cannabis extract imported from the Middle East—detailing the drug's hallucinogenic effects, visions, and philosophical insights during his college years at Union College in the 1850s. Throughout the book, Ludlow colorfully describes his psychedelic journey that led to extended reflections on religion, philosophy, medicine, and culture. The first book on cannabis in English and the first full-length work of American drug literature.
