Hans Andersen. Good Wishes for the Children. Riverside Press, 1873. First Edition. 8vo. 41 pp. Translated by A.A.B. (Adeline A. Bigelow) from a German edition of Andersen's stories. 36 plates, with tissue guards, illustrated by S.G.P. (Sarah Gooll Putnam). Publisher's original lithographed paper covered boards. A good copy only (the spine is worn & torn, with 1" loss at end; wear to extremities, boards showing at corners; scuffing and scraping to boards; front hinge cracked and partially holding; some internal foxing, with the tissue guards mostly protecting the illustrations; contemporary owner name).
One of the scarcest American editions published during Hans Christian Andersen's lifetime. "Good Wishes for the Children" includes his stories published in 1873 as a fundraiser for Boston Children’s Hospital. Since its' publication, the true identies of the translator and the illustrator was a mystery; only recently Laura Wasowicz, the American Antiquarian Society curator of children's literature, recovered the identities of the translator and illustrator.
