Item Details

Berkeley, CA, University of California, (1995)

SIGNED by Joanna McClure. 8vo. xxvi, 536 pp. Index. Color plates; black & white illustrations. A fine copy in dust jacket, as new.

"A landmark study of the visual arts and poetry in California from 1925 to 1975, Utopia and Dissent demonstrates the profound influence this regional culture had not only on the arts but on the shape of American thought." - dust jacket flap. The signatory, Joanna McClure, is recognized as an important, though often underappreciated, voice of the San Francisco Renaissance and the Beat Generation. The author writes of McClure's work as helping to shape California's postwar literary culture, challenging the notion that the Beat movement was defined solely by its better-known male figures such as her husband, Michael McClure, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Duncan, Philip Whalen, and Kenneth Rexroth.
