Item Details

Menasha, Wis., Published at Press of The George Banta Publishing Company, (1908)

Small 8vo. 127 pp. Publisher's royal blue cloth with gilt lettering. "45" written in black on ffep; light minor wear, else a fine copy of a scarce Civil War title.

Charles A. Willison enlisted at 16 years of age in August 1862, joining Company H of the 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (76th OVI), a regiment from Licking County that mustered into federal service earlier that year under Colonel Charles R. Woods. The 76th OVI served in the Western Theater, enduring grueling marches, sieges, and battles under generals like Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman. Willison was one of the "boy soldiers" who swelled Union ranks—over 200,000 under 18 years of age enlisted over the course of the Civil War. Throughout his memoir, he writes of these awful war years, tracing his growth from a green recruit to weathered veteran. A favorite among Civil War enthusiasts for Willison's authentic descriptions of his Civil War years.
