Octavo; xiv, 199 pp (including 11-page metrical table at rear). Text in Greek and English. A Near Fine copy (the first few pages are translated with occasional other marginal notes in pencil) in publisher's black cloth ruled in blind; spine titled in gold.

When Stebbins graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy he had a part in the Greek tragedy, and gave the class oration (in 1883, he was recalled to Exeter to give the oration at the centennial celebration of its founding). He graduated from Harvard in 1848 as chaplain and then from the Harvard Divinity School. He was minister of several New England churches before being called in 1864 to succeed Thomas Starr King as minister of the First Unitarian Church in San Francisco. For the next 34 years he devoted his efforts to expanding the influence of his church on the Pacific Coast; he also immersed himself in civic affairs, serving for 26 years as Regent of the University of California, trustee of the Inebriate Asylum and of the Lick School of Mechanical Arts as well as Leland Stanford University.
