INSCRIBED by the author. Narrow small 4to. 53 pp. Hand-set and printed by Kermit Sheets at the Centaur Press. Color decorations were printed directly from blocks carved by Hal Goldman. Near fine in very good dust jacket (light wear & creasing along edges; some wear to spine ends).
Madeline Gleason (1903–1979) occupies a significant place in American literary history. As founder of the San Francisco Poetry Guild, she organized the First Festival of Modern Poetry in San Francisco in 1947, an event widely regarded as laying the groundwork for the San Francisco Renaissance and, ultimately, the Beat movement from which poets such as Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, Jack Spicer, and Allen Ginsberg emerged. She was also one of only four women included in Donald Allen's influential anthology "The New American Poetry 1945–1960", confirming her importance among mid-century American poets.
