Small 8vo. 400, [8 pp publisher advertisements] pp. Frontispiece portrait of the author, with tissue guard and 7 illustrated plates. Publisher's blindstamped brown cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on spine; green endpapers. Light, general wear; corners slightly rolled; else a near fine copy of the uncommon First Edition.

An important eyewitness account of "Bleeding Kansas," the series of violent confrontations between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the Kansas Territory from 1854 to 1859 over whether to enter the Union as a free or slave state. The author dedicated his book to Kit Carson, fellow friend and traveler. (U.S.iana 1177)
