According to Herbert Hunt’s 1916 book Tacoma: Its History and Its Builders (Vol 2) the company originally started out in 1885 under the name Wheelwright & Hunt.  When Wheelwright sold out in 1887 and Mottet bought in, the name was changed to Hunt & Mottet.  After Hunt’s death in 1895 the company was incorporated as Hunt & Mottet Co.  The company moved several times in the Tacoma business and warehouse districts until 1907 when they built a 7-story building at 2112-2114 Pacific Avenue.  The building served as its main headquarters and warehouse on into the 1950s.  In 1916 the firm was recognized as one of the largest general and heavy hardware companies and mill suppliers in the Pacific Northwest with agents covering Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Alaska.

This particular 1926 Catalog #8 is geared to wholesaling to general hardware stores as there are no sections related to heavy hardware, such as larger mining, sawmill and logging equipment.  Instead, this catalog contains general hardware store items such as hand tools, cutlery, sporting goods, firearms, cooking ware, locks, and automobile accessories – illustrated, described and priced.  The fact that there are missing pages not bound into this catalog reflects the company’s decision to cater to goods appropriate to the clientele of general hardware stores.

We found no copies of this particular catalog for sale on-line.  Nor could we find any institutions reporting to OCLC that they held a copy.
