[CHINA – PHOTOGRAPHS] [STEREO VIEWS] [UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD] Underwood & Underwood. Group of twelve stereo views of Chinese places, scenery and people, including Chinese dignitaries, published by Underwood & Underwood, 1900-1901.
Tan, curved mounts. The copyright dates range between 1900 and 1901. Overall, the group of 12 stereo views is in VG condition; the contrast is a slight weak, but every image is still very visible with good detail. [26-1058]
These photographs (made into stereo views) were taken soon after an international military alliance (including the United States) in August 1900 captured the city of Beijing, which had been under siege for almost two months by the anti-foreign imperialism forces during the Boxer Rebellion. The Chinese dynasty had sided with a large group of its citizens who were anti-foreigners and anti-Christian and wanted to drive out the Legations and missionaries.
The group includes the following titled views:
[1] Li Hung Chang, China’s greatest Viceroy and Diplomat (photographed in his Yaman, Tientsin, China, Sept. 27, 1900).
[2] Greatest of China’s Statesmen – Li Hung Chang in the Court of his Yamen, Tientsin, China.
[3] Prince Su, title earned by distinguished bravery – gave palace and provisions to besieged Legations – Peking, China.
[4] Prince Ching, Commander of City Guard – secret friend of Legations during Siege – now Peace Commissioner, Peking, China.
[5] Sacred to the “Son of Heaven” – Grand Throne in the Emperor’s Palace, Forbidden City, Peking, China.
[6] Ministers of Foreign Powers during negotiations with China – leaving Spanish Legation after a sitting – Peking, China.
[7] One of the typical “freight trains” that carry China’s home commerce – Caravan leaving Peking.
[8] Strange Medley from many Nations at the Public Water Hydrant – during foreign occupation – Tientsin, China.
[9] Old Tientsin, showing terrible destruction caused by bombardment and fire, China.
[10] North from Ha-ta-men Gate over scene of the German Minister Baron Ketteler’s murder – now called Ketteler Street – Peking, China.
[11] A “Lily Footed” Woman of China – this outrage against Nature has been in vogue 900 years.
[12] Japanese Ladies under a beautiful Mauritius Palm (Chrysolidocarpus) , Public Gardens, Hong Kong, China.
