Dr. William Smith (1754-1821) was an Anglican priest and educator in America who was responding to the teachings of Rev. Samuel Blatchford (1767-1828), an ordained Presbyterian Pastor who was educated in England but came to America in 1795. Blatchford served as a pastor in several churches in New York and Connecticut. He, like Dr. Smith, also became involved in the administration of colleges. The text involves Smith’s theological reasoning about church governance, the validity of Presbyterian ordination, and the sameness and/or differences between the authority of Bishops and Presbyters.
