The Preface states, “The first edition of the Twentieth Century Cook Book, prepared in 1901, by the Ladies’ Aid Society of the First Christian Church, has long since been exhausted. The demand for a new edition has become so great that the original book, revised and enlarged by the edition of many new and tested recipes, is now presented to the public. The recipes have been compiled with great care. They are all tested and tried and need no further commendation than the name attached to each.” The majority of the recipes have a local woman’s name printed at the end of the entry.
The index lists the various recipe categories: Bread; Sandwiches; Cookies, Doughnuts and Gingerbread; Soup; Meats and Fish; Vegetables; Salads; Puddings; Pies; Cakes; Breakfast and Tea Cakes; Icings and Fillings; Preserves and Pickles; Drinks; Ice Cream; Candies; Invalid’s Tray; and Miscellaneous. Also included at the end is information on Weights and Measures and Household Hints. The three pages filled in by hand give recipes for Beefsteak Saute, Mrs. Eels Salad Dressing (added on March 12, 1908), and Plum Pudding. One of the pinned-in sheets is titled “My Own Recipe for Onion Pickles [and] French Pickles”. The other is a recipe for “Pickled Peaches, Pears, and Sweet Apples”.
