Item Details

W. H. Jackson, circa 1869-1878

VG+ to Near Fine

[PHOTOGRAPHS]  [STEREOVIEWS]  [UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD]  [HAYDEN SURVEYS]  W. H. Jackson.  Three flat mount stereoviews by William Henry Jackson, two from his “Scenery of the Union Pacific Railroad” series and one from his “Picturesque Views of Rocky Mountain Scenery”, taken some time between 1869 and 1878.

Yellow flat mounts, each measuring 7 x 3.5 inches; plain backs.  A tad light in contrast, o/w in VG+ to Near Fine condition.  [24-XWA]

William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) took photographs along the newly completed Union Pacific Railroad in 1869.  In 1870 he became the photographer of Hayden’s Survey Expeditions in the West, continuing in that capacity until 1878 when the surveys were curtailed.  Each of the three stereoviews is numbered and titled below the right-side image along the bottom margin of the mount.  The three views are “No. 123.  Rocks in Echo Canon”; “No. 184.  Dale Creek Canon”; and “No. 307.  East from Independence Rock”, the latter being the one from Jackson’s “Picturesque Views of Rocky Mountain Scenery”.

Nice early landscape views of the American West by one of America’s great 19th century photographers of the Western landscape, its indigenous inhabitants, and early non-Indian settlers and settlements.
