This is an interesting little journal compiled by Dr. Park Lewis of Buffalo, New York. Dr. Lewis was vice-president of the International Society for Prevention of Blindness, and based on correspondence found online, lived at the address given in the journal in 1926. This ca. 1930s time period is consistent with the publication dates of works quoted (1907, 1927 and 1929).
The handwritten journal espouses various philosophical and scientific thoughts written by famous philosophers and scientists. These include Henri Bergson (Introduction to Creative Evolution), Bertrand Russell (Philosophy), Immanuel Kant, Edward Carpenter, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Thomas Carlyle. Mostly they seem to be direct quotes, though Parks branches out with his own commentary about Percy Bridgman’s article The New Vision of Science. Also included is a bit of early immigration history on the Lambert family, and names of people inscribed on a silver bowl Lewis that presented to a relative.
Measures about 3 ½” x 6 1/2", with Lewis’ name and address in gilt on cover. Some wear to leather.
