SAN FRANCISCO, ROESCH & KNOPF, 1870s
This trade card advertises Roesch & Knopf, a San Francisco printing firm. Louis Roesch is listed in Jay Last's book The Color Explosion, but there is no mention of William Knopf. I could find no mention of the firm of Roesch & Knopf, though Louis Roesch is listed in San Francisco city directories from the 1870s through the early 1900s, including at the California Street address in the 1877 directory.
Louis Roesch immigrated to the United States in 1872 from Germany. The Louis Roesch Company was one of more than fifty major printing and lithography businesses in San Francisco which together employed over 5000 individuals. It specialized in printing labels for the wines and crated, canned, and bottled foods produced by California's booming agricultural industry.
2 5/8" x 4 3/4" - printed on card stock and in fair condition with toning visible in the scan. The reverse is blank.
