Item Details

TUSKEGEE AL, TUSKEGEE NORMAL SCHOOL, 1892

The Southern Letter was published from 1887 to 1931 by the Tuskegee Normal School.  Booker T. Washington founded the school to train teachers and provide practical vocational education for "the Negro race." He served as its principal from 1881 to 1915.

The front page features an article by C.A. Powell, a Tuskegee graduate, who used his skills to build a schoolhouse in Thompson's AL and served as its teacher.

There is also an announcement that Frederick Douglass would be the speaker at Tuskegee's commencement on May 26.

The paper includes testimonials from local businessmen praising the quality of the work done by the students in Tuskegee's print shop, as well as a call for donations of machinery, bedding, books, and money for the school.

An ad for prospective students states that the tuition is free and the monthly boarding fee is $8.00.  The school's enrollment was 450 students - 250 boys and 200 girls.  The average age of the students was 18 1/2.

4 pp - 6 1/2" x 9 5/8" - very good condition.
