The foreword is signed by Irwin Hersey (1920-2010) well-known authority on African tribal art.
The Lobi belong to an ethnic group that originated in what is now Ghana. Towards the end of the 18th century, many Lobi migrated into southern Burkina Faso and later into the Ivory Coast. The present population is just over one million and makes up about 2.4 percent of t Burkina Faso’s total population. The exact number of Lobis in Ghana and Ivory Coast is difficult to scertain, as they are often included as part of larger groups. However, educated estimates point to around 250,000 Lobis in both of these countries. They are Animists, hunter-gathers, herdsmen and particularly warriors, using poisoned darts to fend off enemies and the French colonists.
