Permanent Photographs from Life by Lock and Whitfield (i.e., Woodburytypes), with Brief Biographical Notices by Thompson Cooper. This series appears to have been issued in fascicles, typically 3 portraits per issue, between 1876 and 1883. The present volume, stamped 'Volume 1' on the spine, consists of a prefatory note by George Whitfield, indicating the photographs were taken expressly for this publication. The tipped-in portraits were executed by the Woodbury Permanent Photographic Printing Company. Thirty-three portraits are present, along with a page of biographical text for each; the paper cover of the first fascicle is bound in. In this volume the portraits center primarily on men in law, politics, religion, and education. Remarkable portraits.
