This is the rare edition of this title, containing actual tipped-in photographs, with the section title page reading "Photographs of Union Soldiers, after their return from Imprisonment at Belle Isle; taken at United States General Hospital, Division No. , Annapolis, Md. Printed from the original negatives now in the possession of the United States Sanitary Commission." Paired with this offering is the more common version of the title, virtually identical in text, but bearing wood engravings instead of photographs, with the section title, "Copies of Photographs of Union Soldiers, after their return from Imprisonment at Belle Isle. Accurately copies from the Original Photographs...". Light rubbing to cover and edges; normal aging of the albumen photographs. 1" piece of spine missing in the woodcut edition.
