Near Fine
First published in 1963 in the midst of the civil rights movement & before the “Black is Beautiful” campaign, this coloring book was created by North Carolina social activist Lucille Giles. It offers brief biographical sketches (in the forms of short poems) of 29 prominent African Americans, each accompanied by a blank illustration for children to color. In a message to parents that opens the book, the author states that the book “has been carefully planned to awaken his [your child’s] interest and give him an early knowledge of Blacks who have made vital contributions to world history.” Following its initial publication in 1963, it was reprinted 4 times, then revised in 1974; this is the 8th printing from 1982. Colorful tan wrappers, stapled binding, 64 pp. Exceptionally clean, completely unmarked, no coloring. Just the slightest hint of bumping at corners & a few mild, shallow creases to fore edge side of back cover. Small offset patch to lower title page.
