Near Fine

Homemade scrapbook of a trip to “the Valley Island Maui of the Hawaiian Group” full of mid-century photos, postcards, maps, & other ephemera, depicting the island’s scenery, including many of its luscious plant life. Housed in a black 3-ring binder, an elderly couple from Ventura, CA, documented their travels, landing in Hana, then traveling to Wailua Village, Kaumahina Park, Haleakala volcano crater & the National Park that surrounds it; their hotel, the Maui Palms, in Kahului; the Iao Valley; the building of a new resort at Kaanapali; & Lahaina. This last includes many priceless images in candid photos & a postcard of scenes & landmark attractions & buildings that were tragically destroyed in the fire that consumed the island in 2023.  Tucked in a rear pocket is an undated (c. 1960) magazine article about the making of the movie, “The Devil at Four O’Clock,’’ which began filming in Sept..1960. A time capsule of Hawaiiana locked away for over a half century, showing the fashions, cars, & hotel accommodations typical of the 1960s. . Binder exterior shows minor discoloration, some rubbing & fading. All pages protected in clear mylar scrapbook page protectors, missing one.
