privately published, 1965-1969, stapled wrappers
First Edition, Near Fine
Launched as the official scholarly journal of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex (SSSS), which was to change its name to the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality in 1996. The Society had published a one-issue journal entitled Advances in Sex Research in 1963, which was revamped & published as this journal two years later. Launched by renowned Columbia University sexologist Albert Ellis, with Dr. Hugo G. Beigel as the Editor-in-Chief (a position he would hold for the next 13 years), the journal dared to address “forbidden” topics such as homosexuality, transvestism, transsexualism, prostitution/sex work, abortion, sex education, bisexuality, & psychosexual development in children in an era where such practices were not discussed, at best, or illegal, at worst. Besides the inaugural issue (which we have 6 duplicates of), this listing includes the following early issues: July 1965, Feb. & Aug. 1967; Feb. May, & Nov. 1968; Feb. & May 1969 (2 copies of the latter). Condition on most is Near Fine: stored for over half a century, they were never distributed, but used for inclusion in Sociological Abstracts (founded by another SSSS member & Assoc. Editor, Leo Chall). Blue wrappers with black & white lettering, 2-stapled binding, approx. 100 pages each issue. Most issues show rubbing/insect damage to extremities. The interiors are white, clean, & unmarked. Light exterior soiling with penned numbers to back cover of 1 issue only.
