Catalogue of Street & Smith’s Five Cent Weeklies, ca. 1911. Color illustrated pulp catalog promoting Frank Merriwell, Nick Carter, Buffalo Bill, and more.
32 pp. plus color pictorial wrappers. A scarce and vividly illustrated publisher’s catalogue promoting Street & Smith’s sensational pulp series, including Tip Top Weekly, Nick Carter Stories, Buffalo Bill Stories, Diamond Dick Jr., and Brave and Bold. Features title listings for hundreds of issues, including a full-page “Latest Titles” list for the series, including Tip Top Weekly, and a back cover page advertising the reprint series New Medal Library for early Merriwell adventures. Includes sample stories such as “Frank Merriwell’s Coward” (Tip Top Weekly, Jan. 21, 1911) and “Buffalo Bill’s Crow Scouts” (Buffalo Bill Stories, No. 846), along with advertising copy extolling the reach and wholesomeness of their titles.
The rear pages bear manuscript notations for issue orders and a large, naïve pencil sketch of a man in profile, likely by a young reader, giving the item a strong period character. Wrappers chipped at edges with wear to spine, folk repairs; interior pages browned but complete and legible.
A true survivor from the golden age of dime novels and youth weeklies—both a bibliographical reference and an ephemeral artifact of early 20th-century American popular culture.
Related terms: dime novels, pulp fiction, Street & Smith, Frank Merriwell, Tip Top Weekly, Nick Carter, Buffalo Bill, Brave and Bold, Diamond Dick, juvenile fiction, advertising, 1911, publishing history, American popular literature
