Item Details

The Iliad of Homer. Rendered into English Blank Verse by Edward Earl of Derby. London: John Murray, 1864. Two volumes. Octavo. Bound in full red pebbled morocco with large gilt medallion portrait of Homer in central panel, Greek key borders, raised bands, gilt spine titles and floral devices, all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. A classic Victorian gift/prize binding with moderate rubbing to edges, some scuffing to joints and tips, but hinges strong and contents clean. An attractive example of this important translation by Edward Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, praised in its time by Tennyson and Matthew Arnold. Printed by Spottiswoode for John Murray.
