Very good

This three-page broadsheet advertising Bibles for display upon International Order of Odd Fellows (I. O.of O. F.) lodge altars is printed on light blue bifold paper. It was sent through the post office as a stampless, folded circular. Its partially printed address reads "The Secretary of Macungee / Lodge, No. 231 I.O. of O.F. / Foglesville, Pa."  It bears a circular Philadelphia "1Paid" postmark. In nice shape.

The first page of the circular is a form letter addressed "To the Officers of the Lodge, I. O. of O. F." and reads in part:

"The undersigned beg to call your attention to the following description of a Quarto Bible, which has been expressly prepared for Lodges of I. O. of O. F.

"No Lodge is complete without a copy of the Sacred Scriptures. It is not only a necessity, but it forms one of the Chief Ornaments of a Lodge. While the regalia and the furniture of the Lodge room all bear upon them some insignia of the order . . . the Bible, which is the Chief Ornament of the Lodge, usually has . . . no sign or evidence that is appropriated to Lodge purposes. . ..

"For the sum of Ten Dollars ($10,) we offer to furnish this book to Lodges of I. O. of O. F., in rich Turkey Morocco binding, gilt edges, and adorned with ornaments in gold, as represented on the second page of the Circular, with the name of the Lodge for whose use the copy may be ordered, lettered in gold upon the side. . .."

The second page is as described above.

The third page shows one of the Bible's pages.

Although the I. O. of O. F. is strictly a non-sectarian, fraternal organization and explicitly prohibits discussions of sectarian religion or politics during meetings, its core tenets, degrees, and symbols are heavily built around biblical narratives and practices. By official Order protocol, an open copy of the Holy Bible must be placed on the central altar in the lodge room during meetings. While modern interpretations allow members of other faiths to place their respective sacred texts on the altar alongside it, the presence of the Christian Bible is traditionally a mandatory foundational requirement for a lodge to open.
