Goldfield, Nevada, Las Vegas & Tonopah Railroad Company, 1909
Very good
This lettersheet from the Traffic Department of Las Vegas & Tonopah Railroad Company contains a business letter related to printing costs that is dated 11 November 1909.
Between 1900 and 1910, railroad construction in Nevada boomed, fueled by rich strikes of silver at Tonopah and Silver Peak and gold at Goldfield. Two of the most significant, the Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad (LV&T), the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (SLR) were both owned by U.S. Senator and copper mining magnate William A. Clark. A third, the Bullfrog Goldfield Railroad (BGRR) was owned by an investor group with ties to the mining fields at Rhyolite and Beatty.
The full-page map on the reverse of the lettersheet shows all three despite being titled as the LV&T and displaying the logo of the BGRR.
The BGRR ran for 80 miles connecting the mines of Goldfield, Beatty, Bullfrog, and Rhyolite with the LV&T. The LV&T connected the BGRR with Las Vegas, where it linked to the SLR, which ran between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Although they initially competed fiercely, as the mines played out, they joined together, both unofficially and officially to keep train service operating in the region.
Other railroad lines, including the Southern Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe are also shown on the map.
