New York, Fair Play for Cuba Committee, 1961, Soft cover

First Edition, First Printing, About Very Good

Transcript of one of the most important speeches by Cuban leader Fidel Castro in which he declares his support for Marxism-Leninism.

"I am a Marxist-Leninist, and I shall be a Marxist-Leninist to the end of my life," he said in the speech on December 2, 1961 (see pages 64-65). According to an Associated Press account of the speech, "The Cuban leader's assertion in a television broadcast was the frankest he has made in his swing toward communism."

The lengthy speech was translated from the Spanish and published in English by the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, an  organization that supported the Cuban revolution and counted Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of President John F. Kennedy, as a member.

In his speech, Castro talks about the Cuban revolution, the nature of socialism, relations with the United States, "sacrifices" by the USSR, and many other topics. He speaks in a largely conversational style rather than in a stiff, formal way.

He also talks about the dangers of dictatorship. "I really was not born with any bent to be a dictator, although leading an army at war creates the kind of authority, as armies do, that makes for one-man rule....I never got any special pleasure from giving orders" (page 31).

A fascinating look at Castro's thinking -- and way of speaking -- in the early years of the Cuban revolution.
