Set during the drôle de guerre ("the Phoney War") from autumn 1939 to spring 1940, this novel follows a group of French soldiers stationed in the Ardennes forest under the command of a young lieutenant. The narrative draws heavily on the wartime experiences of Julien Gracq (1910-2007; born Louis Poirier), who served during the Second World War.
