Item Details

Henry W. Brosin (1904-1999) was Chief of Psychiatry of several WWII military bases, awarded the rank of Colonel. Brosin chaired the Dept of Psychiatry at University of Chicago before moving to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School as Director of Western Psychiatric Institute (1951-69).

 

During his impressive career, he served as Director of the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, President of the American Psychiatric Association & as the representative to the National Academy of Sciences.

 

Margaret (Wilson) Gerard (1894-1954) Dr. Gerard attended Rush Medical School (Doctorate in Neuroanatomy) & studied in Zurich, London & Vienna before becoming Professor of Children’s Psychiatry & Psychoanalysis at the University of Illinois in 1927.  7 x 9” photograph w/ paper label attached to glass.

 

Ralph Gerard (1900-1974) Behavioral Scientist // Neurophysiologist known for his work on Psychopharmacology & study of biological basis for Schizophrenia. Gerard served classified projects at Aberdeen Proving Grounds during the Second War, Fellowed at Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Science in Stanford & helped to establish the Mental Health Research Institute at University of Michigan. The Ralph W. Gerard Prize in Neuroscience honors significant contributions in the field.

Daniel Blain (1898-1981) As first Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association & through his work as head of Psychiatric & Neurologic Division of Medicine & Surgery in the Veterans Administration, Blain revolutionized the way that patients were institutionally treated by establishing a partnership with the universities that trained mental health staff during schooling. His work was ground breaking in addressing veterans mental health issues sustained during their service.

Ray L. Birdwhistell (1918-1994) was an American Anthropologist who founded the study of Kinesics (communication cues outside of spoken language). After working at the Foreign Service Institute at the Department of State, Birdwhistell became Professor of Psychiatric Research at Temple where he famously argued that video documentation accompany written cultural interviews. He was a contemporary of Margaret Mead.

 

8 x 10” on larger mat identified Ray L. Birdwhistell Philadelphia June 1960. On reverse is written For Dr. Henry W. Brosin Personal & WPIC Lab.

 

H. Gideon Wells (1875-1926) Pathologist & Immunologist who led two Red Cross commissions to Romania during the second WWII under Hoover’s United States Food Administration. University of Chicago — president of the American Association for Cancer Research, American Association of Pathologist & Bacteriologists & the American Association of Immunologists. Member of the National Academy of Sciences.  7 x 9” photograph of an earlier oil portrait identified in white ink H. Gideon Wells, 1939.

 

Found accompanying the others, these last two are clearly related to Brosin but research has failed me.  Benjamin (Ben) Alpers inscribed With Happy Memories of Board Days. Unclear, but possibly Biochemist Joseph B. Alpers (1925-2011). 8 x 10” w/ Fabian Bachrach studio stamp.

 

Helen Ross inscribed Best Wishes to Marvin Stewart from Helen Ross, 1965. Possibly Helen Ross Russell (1915-2014), famed Environmental Scientist. 8 x 10” on larger mat.

 

Conditions are very nice, photographs are of course taken through the original glass of each so missing some depth. All fittings & backs are original w/ nothing more than paint flakes to modest frames.
