Printed from Alexander William Kinglake's Eothen. Lady Hester, born in 1776, was the eldest daughter of the third Earl of Stanhope, inventor of the iron printing press, and William Pitt's niece, with whom she lived for many years and ran his household. Pitt said of her: "I let her do as she pleases; for if she were resolved to cheat the devil she could do it." Wood engravings by Robert Gibbings, originally commissioned in 1940 for the Kynoch Press but stopped from publication when a bomb hit its paper warehouse. Printed in 12 pt Bodoni italic on damped B F K Rives rag paper.
