Item Details

Vintage silver print on postcard stock, ca. 1920. Size: 5 1/2 x 3 1/2. Titled “Zue Robertson” & annotated “Prop. of David A. Stuart” in ink on reverse of the photograph. Mounted with tape to a window mat. Originally in the collection  of David Stuart [owner of Jazz Man Record Shop in Los Angeles, established in 1939, the first jazz record shop on the West Coast]. This print was used to illustrated A Pictorial History of Jazz  (page 12) by Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer (Crown Publishers, New York, 1955). Very few photographs of Zue Robertson are known to exist.

Early jazz musician, Zue Robertson (1891-1943) was credited by many with setting the style for all who followed on the slide trombone.  His career began in his native New Orleans;  later he moved to Chicago, New York and California before his demise. He played with leading musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver. In the later years of his career he gave up the trombone and played piano and bass.
