Item Details

Very good.

Single page, ALS, 5 X 8, W.W. SHACKELFORD, Forage Master, Office Of A.Q.M., sends supplies from Georgetown, SC,  to troops in the field to an unnamed Captain, May 21, 1863. “I send the Flat unloaded & ready to be brought back tomorrow by Steamer – there are some tents in the bottom of the Flat which please have care taken of & return with the Flat. As soon as you can replace the corn it will be desirable as our stock is now very low. “

Georgetown played a significant role in the Civil War, primarily due to its location as a major rice producing area and its proximity to the coast. Federal blockading ships frequently raided plantations and the town was eventually occupied by Union troops in February 1865. Georgetown also became a site of conflict with Confederate fortifications like Battery White and camps like Lookout and Waccamaw built nearby.

Vertical fold, even toning, in period brown ink.
