Item Details

Excellent.

SIR ARTHUR JOHN GIELGUD as an English actor and theatre director whose career spanned eight decades. With Ralph Richardson and Laurence Olivier, he was one of the trinity of actors who dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century.

Offering a four-piece assemblage, involving Miss A. Taylor at Mount Holyoke College. The grouping:

--7 x 8 ANS to Taylor, February 18, 1947: “I am told that you have in your possession a very interesting scrap-book on literature, music, current events, and the theatre. I was told that perhaps you would like a photograph of me to place in it; so I am taking the liberty of sending you one. I do hope it will be suitable. Best of luck in every way...” Written from Plymouth Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts;

--Black and white photograph, signed by Giegud, full length, and inscribed “best wishes/1947”;

--Theatre program for his appearance in “The Importance of Being Ernest,” by Oscar Wilde, produced in Boston, MA;

--Theatre program for “The Lady’s Not For Burning,” produced in Boston;

Gielgud had the rare distinction of winning an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. He was famous from the start of his career for his voice and his mastery of Shakespearean verse. He broadcast more than a hundred radio and television dramas between 1929 and 1994. In the 1950s Gielgud feared that his career was threatened when he was convicted and fined for a homosexual offence but his colleagues and the public supported him loyally.

The assemblage has normal wear but overall in very good condition.
