CALVIN SCOTT BROWN (1859-1936) founded Hertford’s Chowan Academy for Black students in 1866. Brown was born in Salisbury, NC, of black and Scot-Irish ancestry. He was brought up in poverty and educated at Freedman’s Aid Society School in Salisbury. Brown was also president and treasurer of Waters Normal Institute in Winton, NC. He was highly recognized for the contributions he made to educating African American children.
In the following one-page, ALS, 8 X 10 ½, January 7, 1896, written on stationary containing a striking design of Reynolds Hall at the school, Scott writes to William Washington of Lexington, VA, regarding a financial note.
“I have just received notice that my note as administrator made to you matures on the 11th instant. I shall not be able to reach Lexington before the 16th or 17th. Please arrange to hold it back until I come and I will make some disposition of it. I did not expect it to mature before the last of the month. I shall make all things satisfactory when I come.
“Yours truly,
“C.S. Brown”
Brownattended Shaw University in Raleigh, NC., and traveled to Hertford County in 1885 to take over a church and establish a school. Of Brown, author Frank Stephenson, wrote, “The legacy that Dr. Brown left is almost beyond measure. C.S. Brown School in Winton bears his name, but the most profound impact he had on this entire region was in the education of an untold number of African-American children through Chowan Academy, Waters Normal Institute, and later C.S. Brown School.”
