A Delightful Pocket Book--A Leaf from Plantarum Effigies by Leonhart Fuchs, 1552, published by Herbert Reichner, New York, New York, [1946]. 6 5/8 x 5 inches, bifolium with tipped in leaf.

Cream laid paper with printing to page 1 and 2 plus tipped in leaf to page 3. Very good condition with just the slightest discoloration spot on front and a partial thin brown strip on back. The 1552 leaf is lightly foxed along edge. Very good condition.

Interesting short dissertation on the publication of the first "pocket books" in the 16th century. This keepsake from 1946 was published by Herbert Reicjner of New York and includes an original leaf from: Leonhart Fuchs. Plantarum Effigies. Lyon: Printed and published by Balthasar Arnoullet, 1552. "With the Season's best wishes Herbert Reichner".

The leaf itself is indeed pocketbook sized at 4 5/8 x 3 inches with full-plant engravings on verso and recto identified in Greek, Latin, French, Italian and German.

We find no auction records or copies in commerce as of July 2026. Three copies in OCLC at University of San Francisco, Northwestern and University of Illinois.
