ALS to Michigan Auditor General Hon. John J. Adam, 1848--Folded Stampless Letter

Letter measures 9 5/16 x 7 3/4 inches. Tears at wax seal and chipping to edges and folds. Entirely legible. Paid .10 cent cancel but circular date stamp is illegible. Good condition.

Letter to the Auditor General of the state of Michigan John J. Adam from Sam Hollingsworth of New York City regarding payment of coupons for Michigan's "General Fund" Bonds. Letter states that Hollingsworth's father, Robert purchased bonds in 1836 in the amount of $36,000 with a further loan of $64,000 a few months later. "In order that the interest on the $36,000 & $64,000 might be payable here on the same day at the request of Governor Mason, my father exchanged his certificates for those which I now hold bearing interest from May & November."

Sam Hollingsworth apparently was affiliated with the General Theological Seminary in New York City as noted on his signature, but we find little else about him.

John J. Adam was a noted Michigan politician who served variously as Michigan State Treasurer and Auditor General. He also served several terms in the Michigan State House and Senate.  He served as regent of the University of Michigan from 1837-1840.
