All but one of the 3.25 x 4-inch slides are identified along the edge in typed captions. All but 11 of the slides are numbered, ranging from 15 to 84 The black paper edging on 12 of the 49 slides need to be replaced/repaired. One of the images is cracked and all are in great focus with subtle coloring highlighting aspects of each image. Some surface soiling and dirt. Overall, very good condition.

Group of 49 colored glass lantern slides of Mt. Hood, Oregon circa 1922. Includes photos from a Hood River American Legion climb from 1922, horseback parties on the mountain, a series of agricultural images, early skiing views, hunting, horseback excursions and a selection of scenic views.

Identified place names on and around Mt. Hood include, Brooks Meadow, Elliott Glacer, Crater Rock, Cooper Spur, Brooke Meadow, Trout Creek, Green Point Creek, East Fork Irrigation Ditch near Baseline Steel Bridge, Newton Clark Glacier, Woodworth Park, Elks Meadow, Lookout Mountain, Middle and East Forks of the Hood River, Shell Rock, Parkdale, and Tenny Creek. Also included are lantern slides of a cougar, bob cat, Indian Basket Grass, sheep herds and sheep dogs, trails, horseback parties (including several with women included in the group), and hiking in rocky terrain.

The approximate date of the group of slides comes from one that is identified with the caption Summit of Mt. Hood, Ore / "Group over the Top" / Legion Climb 1922. Members of the American Legin post in Hood River, on the north side of Mt. Hood, began an annual climb of Mt. Hood in 1921. Accounts online from the Hood River Historical Museum and the local newspaper of August 17, 1922, indicate that this 1922 climb was led by the legendary mountaineer Mark Weygandt, who became the official guide of Legion climb parties. In this climb he led five Legionnaires on a five-day journey around all sides of Mt. Hood, including an ascent to the summit. The other men in the party were Kent Shoemaker, Hans Hoerlein, Fred Donnerberg, Harry W. Farrell, and William Cochran. The newspaper account of the trip in the Hood River newspaper mentions that Fred Donnerberg took photos of the trek and climb. However, at this time, we cannot say with any certainty that these can be attributed to him. The Legion continued their annual climb, often with the Krag Rats out of Hood River acting as guides.

Despite numerical notations we are unclear if this is a single collection/photographer or compilation of Mt. Hood views. As such we assigned the following themes: Horseback trips (9), Agriculture (7), Mountaineering (7), Hunting, (7), Mt. Hood Scenic Views (15), and Early Skiing (4). Each subset worthy in and of themselves but in total, a significant and beautiful collection from Mt. Hood Oregon, complete with annotations.
