A wonderful and important handwritten letter from 1937 from Ira Gershwin to American composer, Harold Arlen soon after the death of George Gershwin. It says in part:
“Dear Harry, Here are four checks from The Show is on….Will you please have them cancelled and issue two new checks, one made out to Estate of George Gershwin and the other to Ira Gershwin and have both checks mailed to me?…How are you coming along with the Wynn show? How is Vincente? I haven’t heard from him. I hope you’re well and not letting show business get you down too much. On September 8th there’s to be a big memorial concert at the Hollywood Bowl. It’s to be broadcast so you can listen in if you’re not at rehearsals. I’d been pretty low but am feeling better the past few days. My best, Ira”
There are very few letters that give any insight into Ira’s emotions after the death of his brother. An important piece.
