An interesting archive of 70 letters from the family of Botanist Thomas Potts James and his wife Abolitionist Isabella Batchelder James. Isabella was the President of the Pennsylvania Freedmen's Commission after the Civil War. The archive starts in the early 1800s and includes letters into the early 1900s. There are a number of letters by Isabella to her daughter after the Civil War and a number of letters from her mother before the war. At first glance, there is not much content related to abolition or African-Americans, but the letters are quite detailed and worthy of further research from a woman of great importance.
