Early printing of this delightful pictorial map which “shows in colourful detail the varying types, costumes and accoutrements of everyday life, war and ceremony; their basketry, pottery, bead and quill work, textiles, canoes, habitations. . . .” As noted by Lee Shippey in the 1942 Los Angeles Times, Mora, or, “the Renaissance Man of the West” packed history, geography, and personal details into a series of maps. . . which have told their story to more persons, probably, than have the works of any other Californian.” First issued in 1936, this map together with the catalogue indicates this was printed in about 1946, as indicated by the inclusion of the large 1945 Pictorial California Map, and publisher’s notice for the Trail Dust and Saddle Leather issued by Scribner’s in 1946. Mora (1876-1947) after emigrating from Uruguay as a child, first studied art in New York, lived in Arizona with the Hopi and Navajo Indigenous Peoples, photographed and painted them, and moved finally to Pebble Beach in 1922, before setting up his studio near the Carmel Mission.
