Item Details

Washington DC, United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, 1877-80, Folded Map

Good

Folded map titled “Sketch Showing the Primary Triangulation of Colorado”. It is the same map as another map titled "Triangulation Map of Colorado". Both were created by J.T. Gardner and A.D. Wilson under the supervision of F.V. Hayden. Litho by Julius Bien. Bien was the lithographer and the maps are very detailed. Originally published in 1877, the latter was published in 1881. This map is part of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, a project overseen by the Department of the Interior. This map is meticulously detailed, focusing on the triangulation of Colorado. It is a fine example of 19th-century cartographic work, utilizing a combination of engraving and lithography techniques. The lines radiating from numerous points indicate the triangulation measurements used to map the area accurately. The map was part of Hayden's comprehensive survey efforts, which were crucial for the economic and scientific understanding of the western territories. These surveys helped facilitate settlement and resource exploitation, playing a significant role in the westward expansion of the United States. This map looks like it might have been removed from a book and might actually be the 1877 printing. 25” x 37” unfolded. One edge tear in the border on the left edge. Likely where it was removed from a book. A few very small splits along the folds. Very few. See images.
