Item Details

Ramsbottom, UK, Unpublished, 1906-1924, Photograph Album

A small archive of photographs depicting the manufacture of industrial machinery including the work in progress and the finished machines, one of which is labeled as a "Six Colour Printing Machine" I would estimate that the bound photographs date from 1900-1914 and the loose photographs from 1906-1924.

Oblong photograph album. 9 1/2" by 6 1/2" with twelve unique 8" by 6" photographs bound in and four loose 6 1/4" by 4 1/2" photographs, one of which is a duplicate. The back of the photographs are blank with the exception of the duplicates, one of which bears an ink stamp of the company and the other a small pencil sketch. Slight curl to bound photographs.

JOHN WOOD (ENGINEERING) LTD, later WOOD’S ENGINEERS (RAMSBOTTOM) LTD was started by John WOOD in 1881. In its early days John WOOD’S engineering business manufactured textile finishing machinery, particularly for calico printing. In about 1896 he became actively interested in photogravure printing machines and the firm played its part in developing paper printing and finishing machinery and its advances in the design of the simple machines first used in photogravure printing led to the production of high speed color presses which were widely used in the printing and wallpaper trades.
